FAQs
Here are a few tidbits to answer common questions.
ForeFlight Mobile
What is ForeFlight Mobile 2.0 (FFM2.0)?
ForeFlight Mobile 2.0 (FFM2.0) is the essential flight companion for any pilot. It's your one stop for weather, airports, hotels, aircraft registrations, flight plan filing, and more. FFM2.0 is a native iPhone application, meaning it runs on the device, giving a familiar visual experience and great responsiveness.
What data is stored on the iPhone?
The A/FD country and state listings are stored on the device as well as DUATs settings. Airport details, charts, approach plates and other elements are downloaded from their sources (such as NACO) as you request them. Therefore a web connection (Edge, 3G, or WiFi) is required to use FFM2.0 at this time. We know from our own experience and the feedback of ForeFlight users that having those items on the phone itself will be of tremendous utility, and it's the #1 feature we're working on. We can't provide an estimate of when, but rest assured that we're working diligently to make it happen!
How much does FFM2.0 cost?
$69.99, one time charge. There are no subscription fees for FFM2.0. This is a special introductory price that will increase when the "native data" release is made. All existing FFM2.0 users will receive the native-data upgrade free of charge when it is released.
How do I buy FFM2.0?
Visit the Apple AppStore (using iTunes on your desktop or the App Store icon on your phone) to purchase FFM2.0 and download it to your iPhone.
I'm a FF1.0 user. How do I upgrade to FFM2.0?
If you joined ForeFlight as an annual subscriber within the past 30 days and would like to upgrade to ForeFlight Mobile 2.0, visit the App Store to buy FFM2.0, send us your FFM2.0 purchase receipt and we'll refund your entire FF1.0 payment. If you became a FF1.0 annual subscriber between 31 and 90 days ago, send us your FFM2.0 purchase receipt and we'll refund a prorated portion of your FF1.0 payment based on the unused months. If you started with FF1.0 more than 90 days ago, no refund will be issued.
Also, please know that we will continue to support ForeFlight iPhone Edition 1.0 for quite some time - though all upcoming features will be added to v2.0, not v1.0.
Can I try before I buy?
Apple currently provides no mechanism for trying the software before buying. Please spend a few minutes watching the short videos to get a feel for the capabilities of FFM2.0, and if you like what you see, head on over to the App Store.
What is your refund policy?
All refund requests for ForeFlight Mobile must be directed to Apple. Similar to Amazon or a retail store, you return the product to the seller, not the manufacturer.
Do CFIs get FFM2.0 for free?
We were pleased to offer active CFIs a free ForeFlight 1.0 account, but unfortunately with the native application we have no mechanism for distributing FFM2.0 free of charge. Therefore, the "free for CFI" offer is discontinued with FFM2.0.
Is my home airport in FFM2.0?
Probably! If you'd like to know up-front, drop us a note at team@foreflight.com and we'll be happy to check.
Is there a difference when using ForeFlight products on iPod touch instead of the iPhone?
All ForeFlight iPhone applications work the same on the iPod touch. There are minor exceptions to this though - SMS messages cannot be sent to an iPod, nor can phone numbers be auto-dialed. Additionally, the iPod touch requires WiFi access to use ForeFlight products.
Is ForeFlight Mobile supported outside the United States?
Yes! With the this new version 2.0 we have added support for a large number of international airports! The only caveat is that weather data is less complete for some international airports. Additionally, flight plan filing, sectional/IFR charts, and approach plates are currently only supported for the U.S. If you have specific concerns, please contact us.
Can I install ForeFlight Mobile on multiple devices?
Yes, you can. The application works much like music you buy on iTunes - you can install it on multiple devices that you own. We know for a fact that FFM2.0 can be purchased and then installed on at least 2 devices (iPhones and/or touches), though we think Apple may allow as many as 5. To put FFM2.0 on each of your devices, simply buy ForeFlight and sync both devices with the same copy of iTunes. We will update this FAQ item as we get more details.
What do the colored circles mean beside airport listings?
Those are flight rule icons - green means "VFR", blue means "MVFR", red means "IFR", hot pink means "LIFR", and gray means "unknown".
How do I view a route in ForeFlight Mobile?
Simply perform a search for multiple airport IDs, separating each by a space. For instance, search for KSFO KDEN KJFK to view that route. Recently issued ATC route data will also be shown when available.
How do I find the distance between two airports in ForeFlight Mobile?
Simply make a route as described above. For instance, to find the distance between KMIA and KATL search for KMIA KATL. The resulting route view will show the distance as well as the initial magnetic heading to fly from Miami to Atlanta
How do I change my login name for LogTen Mobile?
We are currently adding a tool for this to the system (which will be available from the home page after you log in). However, in the meantime please email team@foreflight.com to request the change. Please provide your current login name as well as the reqested one.
How do I specify my aircraft color in flight plans?
ForeFlight Mobile follows the conventions of DUATS. These are the allowed color values - your aircraft's base color should come first, then any other colors afterward separated by a / character in front of each additional color.
- Amber (or A)
- Blue (or B)
- Beige (or BE)
- Black (or BK)
- Brown (or BR)
- Green (or G)
- Gold (or GD)
- Gray (or GY)
- Maroon (or M)
- Orange (or O)
- Purple (or P)
- Red (or R)
- Tan (or T)
- Turquoise (or TQ)
- Violet (or V)
- White (or W)
- Yellow (or Y)
For example, if your aircraft is primarily white with a black and grey stripe you would use W/BK/GY or White/Black/Gray.
How do I specify my aircraft model in flight plans?
Please see this DUATS search tool and use the "Identifier" value for your aircraft type.
Desktop Edition
Which airports does ForeFlight Desktop Edition support?
ForeFlight has a database of over 8,000 U.S. and Canadian airports. Please demo the software to learn all about them!
What are the differences between the OS X and Windows version?
There are no significant differences between the OS X and Windows versions. And with the Desktop Edition license terms you can use your copy of the software anywhere you'd like - on any machine!
How current is the data in ForeFlight Desktop Edition?
The weather data is very current - the report time will tell you when it was generated. Most observations are less than 1 hour old and most forecasts are less than 6 hours old. The airport/runway information is typically not the most current data, as this doesn't change often. Each new version of ForeFlight will contain the newest possible airport/runway data from the FAA.
Where does ForeFlight Desktop Edition's data come from?
The majority of data in ForeFlight comes from the FAA or NOAA. The raw data they provide is used to generate the many graphical views and alerts that ForeFlight offers.
Why is the alert for Density Altitude based on AGL instead of MSL?
This is because we feel the user would want to know about density altitudes that are above and beyond the field elevation. There's little point in warning an Aspen, CO pilot about density altitude in excess of 3500 MSL since they would already expect that, but a pilot on the eastern seaboard would certainly want to know that. Therefore using AGL instead of MSL provides the user with more pertinent alerts as they change from airport to airport.
How do I view raw METARs and TAFs?
You can open the Raw Weather Reports view by choosing it under the Window menu's "Show View" option.
How does the Desktop Edition 14 day money-back guarantee work?
If for any reason (within 14 days of your purchase) you decide you don't like Desktop Edition you will receive a full refund. Just contact us to let us know - don't be surprised if we ask for your feedback though - we always want to improve the product!
