We hope you can find all the answers to your questions in our comprehensive FAQs. We have also created helpful videos that can answer many questions about using our apps.

How does XM Weather work in ForeFlight Mobile?

ForeFlight Mobile supports the Baron Mobile Link for in-flight weather. This is a piece of hardware you install in the cockpit and attach to an XM Weather receiver, such as the WxWorx WR-10. You also need an XM weather subscription.

The Mobile Link box creates a WiFi hotspot for streaming XM weather. On your iPad or iPhone, you connect to this WiFi network, then XM weather is streamed to your iPad or iPhone.

After your iPad or iPhone is connected to the WiFi network, start up ForeFlight Mobile and XM Weather is automatically fed into the app. This includes United States radar, satellite, TFRs, AIRMETs and SIGMETs, temperature, dew point, and more (see FAQs below for complete list). All of this information shows up in the familiar ForeFlight interface, except it updates live in the cockpit!

What hardware do I need to buy for XM Weather?

The easiest way to get started is with the Mobile Link Bundle, which contains the Baron Mobile Link and the WxWorx WR-10 receiver. This is available for purchase on wxworx.com for $1,124.

If you already have an XM weather receiver that supports the Baron Mobile Link, you can purchase the standalone Baron Mobile Link on wxworx.com for $199.99.

To activate your receiver with an XMWX subscription call (800) 985-9200 or visit http://tinyurl.com/xmactivate. If you need to refresh your receiver, visit http://tinyurl.com/xmrefresh

What are some common In-Flight XM Weather Troubleshooting Tips?

You must be running ForeFlight Mobile version 4.2 or later. You can check that in the About view of the app (on iPad the About view is within the More view). If you have an earlier version, update the app on your device.

Verify that you see "Mobile Link" as the checked WiFi connection in Settings->WiFi. You must also see the wifi icon in the top status bar - it is 3 arcs on the left side

If you have a 3G device, turn OFF Cellular Data in the iPad Settings app when in flight

Run ForeFlight Mobile and go to the Devices view. Make sure you see Mobile Link as a connected device. Tap it to see details. Then check the following:

  1. Access allowed is YES: if not make sure to turn off any other apps that may be using the Mobile Link. It may take as long as 60 seconds for other apps to release control and provide access.
  2. Signal quality is MARGINAL or better: if it is colored red, move the XM receiver antenna to a better location.
  3. Radio state is ONLINE: if not, you likely need to activate or refresh your account with Sirius/XM. The possible states are:
    • Initializing : This occurs when the Mobile Link is first powered up and communication is being established.
    • Reset in Progress : This can occurs when the receiver is attempting to activate and when the softcycle is received. The softcycle only occurs every 30 minutes after all the data products have been received.
    • Online: the receiver is online and receiving data.
    • Activation in process: the receiver is in activation mode and is activating.
    • Unknown: This should only occur when the receiver has been unplugged from the Mobile Link.

Weather data received: check that the weather data ages shown are current. If not, wait for them to update.

If viewing Maps, verify that the Baron logo is displayed in the bottom right (it may be under the HUD GPS readouts).

If viewing METARs/TAFs for an airport, verify that (XM WX) is shown in the age value.

If XM WX still not working in ForeFlight Mobile, send us an email. Include the info shown on the devices view for the Mobile Link. The easiest way to do this is to take a screenshot (press the top sleep button and the bottom home button at the same time). The screenshot will be placed in the Photos app, and from there can be emailed to team@foreflight.com
