¶ What is ForeFlight Military Flight Bag?
ForeFlight Military Flight Bag (MFB) is an enhanced version of the commercial ForeFlight Mobile EFB app. In addition to all the features and data available with the commercial version, MFB also includes worldwide DOD chart coverage, geo-referenced DOD approach plates, and options for secure sideloading of data, making it the ideal mobile solution for government and military pilots.
¶ How can I get an MFB account?
Go to foreflight.com/military, scroll to the bottom of the page, and follow the instructions under How To Buy.
¶ How do I access DOD charts and data in MFB?
MFB includes a fifth download category under Download Settings at the top of More > Downloads called “DOD”. Tapping on this will reveal the data types and geographical regions available for download with MFB. As with the other download categories, pilots can select the data they want to download, then tap the blue Download button at the bottom of More > Downloads to download the data to their device. Unlike the other download categories, charts and data that are specific to MFB cannot be viewed “over-the-air” on a Wi-Fi or cellular connection - they must be downloaded to the device in order to be viewed. An enhanced Airport and Nav Database is also provided with MFB containing additional information about military airports and airspace details.
¶ What DOD charts and data are included in MFB?
ForeFlight MFB includes global geo-referenced D-FLIP high and low enroute charts, geo-referenced D-FLIP terminal procedures, and D-FLIP publications available in the Documents catalog, including AQP pages. MFB also provides additional airport, airspace, and navigation information not accessible in the commercial version of the app.Regions for which charts and data can be downloaded are: United States, Canada, CSA (Central, South America), ENAME (Europe, North Africa, Middle East), PAA (Pacific, Australasia, Antarctica), EEA (Eastern Europe, Asia), Africa.
¶ What is Sideloading?
Sideloading is a feature of ForeFlight MFB that allows aeronautical data products such as charts and procedures to be downloaded to a computer and then transferred to mobile devices via a hardwired connection. This is useful for flight crews operating in remote regions with limited internet bandwidth - rather than downloading the same data files to multiple devices over Wi-Fi, the files can be downloaded to a single computer and distributed to each mobile device individually.
¶ How does Sideloading work?
MFB customers who have the Sideloading feature enabled for their account can create and download “bundles” consisting of charts and data selected by geographical region (U.S., Africa, Eastern Europe & Asia, etc.) and by data type (Airport/Navigation, Enroute Charts, Documents, etc.). These bundles can then be imported to ForeFlight using iTunes or Apple Configurator.
¶ How do I enable Sideloading for my MFB account?
Sideloading can be enabled for your account by one of our sales representatives. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to have it enabled.
¶ What happens when new MFB data is released?
When a new data cycle includes updates for the data types and regions you selected, the download bundles you created will be updated with the new data and can be re-downloaded from the Downloads tab after signing in to foreflight.com.If you checked the box that said “Email me when my download is ready” while setting up your download bundle, you will also receive emails whenever the bundle has been updated with new cycle data and is ready to be downloaded. If you did not check that box then you will not receive any notification emails, and will need to go to the Downloads tab to see if new data is available. The names of the individual .zip files in each download bundle contain the data cycle number (e.g. foreflight1610_1_of_11.zip vs. foreflight1609_1_of_11.zip), so can be used to determine if a given bundle was updated.
¶ Sideloading Step-By-Step
1. Sign into foreflight.com and click Downloads in the left sidebar. 2. Use the checkboxes to select which geographical regions and data types you would like to download. Check “Email me when my download is ready” if you want to be notified by email when your download is ready and receive future emails when new data cycles are available; if you do not check this then you will not receive emails when updated data is available. Click “Create” after making your selections. 3. The files for the regions and data you selected will be gathered into a .zip file. This can take from a few seconds to ten or more minutes, depending on the amount of data you selected; leaving the page will not interrupt this process. When the file is ready it will appear at the top of the page along with its size and a button to download the file to your computer. 4. Instructions for transferring the data from your computer to ForeFlight MFB using either iTunes or Apple Configurator are available on the same page, and are shown below:WHAT’S NEXT? 1.
